The beverage that we know as tea is made from the leaves of the plant camellia sinensis. These leaves are steeped in hot water for varying amounts of time in order to extract the subtle flavors that are contained inside. Tea also refers to any drink made by combining the leaves of various plants or herbs with hot water. For instance, an infusion of chamomile flowers may be called chamomile tea, even though it does not contain camellia sinensis leaves.
